Thinking Thursday

Dear parents and students,

Today was thinking Thursday; we started the day with math. Our first task was to review the homework from last night. The students did their table discussions and we took up question 4 together where students had to identify recursive patterns (which are patterns where the operations are repeated each term, so the numbers cannot be increasing/decreasing or even alternating). Another common error was that students where confusing alternating patterns with recursive; in alternating patterns the two operations are done separately (different terms) and not in the same term in recursive for example:

1.      Start at 10. Alternately multiply by 2, then subtract 5

10, 20, 15, 30, 25, 50…

2.    Start at 10. Multiply by 2, then subtract 5 each time.

10, 15, 25, 45, 85 …

After taking up the homework, we did a lesson on Input/Output tables with 2 operations. Last time, the students struggled with finding the pattern in the input/output table and so we did a class note with an anchor chart. Here is an image of it.

Next, we did group table challenges with various input/output tables and the students had to find the pattern. It was lots of fun and extra practice for the students. Here are some pictures from the activity.

In UOI, the students all finalized their questions and they have started their variables and research. I have asked that the students start bringing their materials in (labeled with their name) by Monday. We will have lab time in Mr.Iqbal’s room where students have access to scientific equipment. Also, we will be using devices for research, pictures, and typing and so I have asked the students to bring their devices everyday if that is possible.
