Working Wednesday

Hello parents and students, 

I hope you are having a great afternoon so far. Today, we started off the day with math and our math discussion group. I found that the students got confused when using decimals, the trick that I use is to move the decimal to the right when going to a smaller unit and moving the decimal to the left when converting to a larger unit. 

We then learned about capacity and I introduced volume. The students completed a challenge for capacity; I gave the students 6  measuring containers with different capacities. All of the containers had the same amount of water except for 1, the students had to use their observation skills and the capacity of the container to figure out which one was different. There is a picture of the challenge below. The majority of the class, picked the 2nd one, Christiaan explained that he actually created fractions and estimated that number 2 was 1/5 of the container and that it was 200 mL! For homework tonight, the students have to complete worksheets on capacity. Here are two videos that help with conversion: from L to mL, and then  from mL to L. 

Next, in UOI the students worked with their research groups to combine their information and create their lessons. I have seen some great conversations and the students are really enjoying themselves. Here are some pictures from today. 

We also had the war memorabilia come in today, the students got a chance to try and experience the different items from World War II. Here are the pictures.

Tremendous Tuesday

Hello parents and students, 

Today was a super exciting field trip day!! We had a wonderful time at the Royal Ontario Museum looking at different ancient civilizations. Here are some great pictures from the trip. I will be adding pictures as I get more from the chaperones. Please feel free to send me any that your child might have.

A note from Oakwood: Dear SJA Families,

Kindness Day is celebrated nationwide annually, on the 13th of November.  It is a day to celebrate and promote kindness in all its forms. World Kindness Day falls on the same day and unites people in kindness globally. On November 13th, St. Jude's Academy is celebrating World Kindness Day by encouraging all students to share kind words to each other and unite as a whole school with their neighbours at Oakwood.  By bringing in $2, students can participate in a special World Kindness Day event by writing a kind message or quote on a leaf and then post it on our World Kindness Tree for all to see.   In addition to sharing their kind words, they will be supporting their neighbours at Oakwood and also be allowed to dress casually. As part of a united world school, IB learners strive to be kind everyday. This year, we are looking forward to emphasizing and celebrating acts of kindness on Monday, November 13th and we hope everyone is able to participate in our World Kindness Day events!

Friendly Friday

Hello parents and students,

I hope you have a great weekend so far. This Friday was an amazing productive and fun day in the grade 5 class. We started with math discussion tables. Then, we completed a 'mass' challenge. The students had balances on their table and I would say a certain mass (ex. 100 g) and the students had to work together to find items of that mass. Here are some pictures from the challenge.

Next, in UOI the students presented their lessons to their students. The groups have worked so hard and the results were fantastic. Here are some pictures of the 'teachers' in action.

In language, we discussed the literature circle roles and what the students' have to do. Our first literature circle (chapter 1-4) in on Monday.

We also had our in class science fair, our reading buddies came to see all of the amazing projects. I do know want to ruin the surprise of the projects so here are some pictures of the great interactions and conversations.

As a group, we also discussed what makes a 'winning' science fair projects and then the students completed science fair peer reviews on each others' projects. Overall, we  had a very busy and productive day.

Thoughtful Thursday

Hello parents and students,

Today, our focus started off with math and the topic of time. We reviewed answers and focused on subtraction of time (elapsed time). In subtraction of time, if the 'minutes' on the number you take-away from are smaller then you need to 'borrow' from the 'hour'. Here is an example below, it is also in the student's notebook.

I have given the students' extra time subtraction practice tonight. We then focused on the 24-hour digital clock and topics in time (decades, centuries etc.). Here is a review video on converting units of time. 

In language, we went through how to be successful in writing a news report (getting that precious level 4 😁). Then, the students edited their work and started their good copies. Their good copies are due tomorrow. Just in case, here is the information again from yesterday.

In UOI, the ancient civilization groups got together and created their lesson for tomorrow's 'class'. Here are the historian groups working together.

Wednesday Why not?

Hello parents and students,

Today was a great day back after probably an eventful evening. We started the day with math and our math discussion tables about 'time'. A common mistake was that students were not reading the analog clock correctly, there is an example below. 

For example, students read the time as 10:07 however the seconds hand hasn't made it to  60 seconds just yet, so the time is 10:06.

 We then started our math concepts of today, 'Different ways of saying time' and 'Elapsed time'. We went through examples together and then the students got time to work on the sheets. A lot students had forgotten that 'quarter' means 15 minutes,' past' is after and 'to' is before. 

In UOI, the ancient civilization groups got together and they combined their research, we then came up with different teaching strategies and the groups decided on their strategy. Here are some pictures from the collaboration session. 

In language, we took our brainstorm for the science fair news report and we created a rough copy. The rough copy is due tomorrow so that the students can work on editing and the final draft. Here is an anchor chart to help with creating a successful news report.
