Tentative Schedule (adjusted Sept. 5)

Monday 30 April 2018

Welcoming Monday

Hello parents and students,

I am so glad to be back at school! I had a great day back and we got right back into routine. Ms.Downey has done an absolutely amazing job and we are lucky to have her for the rest of the week! Her last day will be this Friday.

We started the day off with our balanced winners. In our class, we had two winners Tristan and Sophie! I will attach the pictures from the assembly later.

Next in UOI, we all went to Ms.Walls class were we watched a video of Justin Trudeau's first speech as Prime Minister of Canada. Afterwards, we discussed the importance of a speech in a campaign and what the important components are. Each group then got a chance to work on their speeches, as well as their flags and slides. The projects look great so far, and I am so excited to show parents the final results on Election Day this Thursday!!!

In math today, we reviewed relating graphs and input/output machines with round tables. As a class, we also looked at two strategies to help find the pattern in an input/output machine. Next, we introduced patterns in geometry. First we completed a question as a class on the board, next in groups the students worked on a question using toothpicks! Finally, the students worked questions independently as we walked around and helped individual students. Tomorrow, we will be completing the last lesson in the unit. Then on Monday, we will be having a math quiz!

In language, the students completed their literature circles, there were quite a few that were incomplete. The students must have them complete by tomorrow or they will be getting zeros :(. WE are now on spelling lesson # 27 and it will be due on Friday when we have the spelling test.

As a reminder, our new unit in coding starts next week. The students must have laptops by that point. Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns.

Reminders/Homework

  • Math: Complete page 10.3 - patterns in geometry (graph and full sentences), question 1d. is challenge, Math quiz next Monday
  • Language: Spelling test is Friday (Lesson# 27),  read chapter 17

Friday May 4th: Grade 6 Exhibition

Dear Parents and Teachers of St. Jude's Academy,
We (Rishaan, Jonathan, and Lucas) have an exhibition project on animal agriculture. Have you ever thought about how much water it takes to make one hamburger? Well, the answer is 660 gallons of water. That is equal to showering for about two months straight! As part of our action we have decided to encourage people to go meatless on Mondays during the month of May. We are asking our St. Jude’s Family to join us and pledge to go meatless on Mondays, and make a positive impact on things it affects such as climate change! If you decide to help us by going meatless on Mondays, then you could save 1100 gallons of water, 45 pounds of grain, 30 square feet of forested land, ten pounds of carbon dioxide, and one animal’s life. We hope you decide to help us stop animal agriculture, and go meatless on Mondays. If you decide to go meatless on Mondays, please contact your teacher to receive a pledge form to be returned on or before April 30, 2018!
Thank you
Lucas, Jonathan, and Rishaan

KidSport Day

Good evening Parents and Students

Today, Ms. Walls accompanied half of the Grade 5 students to KidSport.  Those at KidSport had an awesome time playing in the ball pit, checking out the arcade, exploring the jungle gym and participating in other sports. I stayed behind to teach the remaining students from both classes.

In UOI today, we did some fun, but educational activities based on Canadian Government. First, we had a Word Search and a Crossword to work on in groups. To finish off, I took the group to Ms. Walls room where we enjoyed a friendly competition of Question Period on the Canadian Parliament website. It was a Jeopardy based version of trivia completely on our Canadian government and although it was multiple choice, the students found it challenging.

For any students whom might want to check it out, here is the link.  https://lop.parl.ca/About/Parliament/Education/OurCountryOurParliament/game4-e.aspx

For our UOI summative presentations, parents are welcome to attend at 2pm on Thursday May 3rd. Actual presentations will begin at 2:20pm however parents are welcome to arrive at 2:00pm and take a look/ask questions at the display tables. After the presentations and voting, students are allowed to leave with their parents.

For Math today, I took up some questions on MMS5: 10:3 Graphing Patterns and then we moved on to MMS5: 10.1 Representing Patterns, which involved using models, tables, line graphs, and pattern rules to show growth patterns in data.

I shifted the timing of Reading Buddies due to the trip. I know how much both classes look forward to the time together and I didn't want either group to miss out. Reading Buddies went well today. (pictures to follow)

Homework:

Miss Zoe's Last Day

Good evening Parents and Students,

Tomorrow is our class trip to Kidsport. Attending students need to be in their gym uniform please as we leave at 9am sharp. The students will return at noon. Ms. Walls will be attending the trip.

Those not attending need to be in their summer uniform and the combined classes will be spending the morning with Mrs. Downey.

The students were sad to say good-bye to Miss Zoe who has been our assistant for most of the school year. She will be greatly missed. Miss. Zoe brought presents and treats for the students to enjoy. The students loved the extra time celebrating with her.

UOI:
Today, the students continued working on their "Build a Country". Most of them were doing well. They were hashing out their Constitution and trying to determine what their "highest law" would be. Several groups were confusing Rights and Freedoms with Constitutional Law, but we went over it again for both classes. We have been encouraging students to bring in their devices to make it easier to work on their presentations.

We had a presentation from the Grade 6's for their Exhibition today to finish off our UOI time and it was shown to both classes together. The students enjoyed the presentation and were very engaged!

Language:
In Language Arts today, we worked on finishing our plot diagrams using our group table's Picture Book. Then I taught a lesson on Character Traits. Using a graphic organizer called "A Character Profile Sheet" the students choose one of the people in our Novel Study book Shannen and the Dream for a School to be their model and filled in the paper on their selected person.

Math:
In Math today, we took up MMS5:10-6 Tiling Patterns. Some of the students were struggling trying to picture what the patterns would look like when extended, so I did a couple of questions on the board. Then we moved on to MMS5: 10:3 Graphing Patterns which was handed out in class.

Homework:

Language:

Completing your Character Profile Sheet if not already done.
Read Chapter 15 in our Novel Study
Spelling List #26 and Workbook Exercises

Math:

MMS5. 10:3 Graphing Patterns, if not completed in class.

UOI:

Tuesday

Good afternoon Parents and Students

TOMORROW IS CASUAL DAY!
We are also saying a sad goodbye to our teaching assistant Miss Zoe. She has been an amazing help and made the transition in teachers much easier for myself and the students. She will be missed by us all!

As a reminder for students who gave money for the Kid Sports trip: We will be attending the trip Thursday April 26th from 9-12. Students are expected to wear their gym uniforms if going on the trip.

UOI:Government
This morning students worked hard on their Build Your Own Country summative. I checked in with almost every group and a lot of them were working on their services. Several had forgotten some important services that would be absolutely needed and I provided clues to help them figure things out. Ms. Walls sat with almost every group and had a discussion about the type of government they chose for their new country. We want to see lots of detail from groups as it was something we noticed lacking from both classes. Both of us are stressing to students that they will be presenting about their country and trying to convince people to vote them into power. They should be all-knowing about their country and ready to answer any question!

Math:
Today, we took up the answers to the Fibonacci sequence in class. I did some of the answers on the board, which helped out several students who had trouble on the second page. I handed out and explained MMS5: 10.6 Tiling Pattern. Those who didn't finish in class need to complete it for homework.

Language:
Today, we did an activity based on deciphering the pieces of the plot from a Picture Book. First, as a class we answered all the parts to the graphic organizer using Clark the Shark, then I had each table group perform the same exercise, using the different Picture Books they had signed out of the library. Some of my groups did not finish and will be completing the activity tomorrow.

Homework:

Language:

Spelling Lesson #26 and workbook exercises
Chapter 14 in Shannen and the Dream for a School

Math:

MMS5: 10.6 Tiling Patterns (Due tomorrow)

UOI:
Nothing.

Popcorn Day

Hello Parents and Students

Today was a very productive day. We accomplished a lot and I was impressed by how hard the students worked.

This morning we continued with our UOI: Build your own country. It was great to hear all the different names that the groups have created for their new countries. I was also very impressed with the mottos that groups created. Many of them were inspiring and motivating, I can tell that people would be incited to live there! Finally, groups created a rough idea of what they would like to have for their countries flag. The majority of the groups were able to compromise and work together through their difference of opinions. If they had time, groups continued on to create the type of government they want for their country. We will continue with this tomorrow and also start creating a constitution for their country!

In Math today we corrected MMS5: 10-1 Patterns in Multiplication and MMS5: 10-2 Patterns in Decimals with a Calculator. Then we moved on to discuss the Fibonacci Sequence and I handed out MMS5:10-4 Another Number Pattern to work on.

In Language Arts today we conducted our Literature Circles and I was able to hear several students read.

Homework:

Language:

Read Chapter 13 from our Novel Study
Spelling List #26 and workbook exercises due on Friday April 27
Bring a Picture Book to class tomorrow (Tuesday April 24)

Math:

MMS5: 10-4 Another Number Pattern if not completed in class today to be finished for class time tomorrow.

UOI:

No Homework as we are working on Summative

Reminders:

Wednesday April 25: Casual Day

Thursday April 27: Kidsport
The students will be gone from 9:30 to 11:30am for Kidsport.

A note from Ms. Bancud.
Hello all,
You are now able to order for May Lunches. The deadline for May lunches is Saturday, April 28th, 2018.  After this date, our system closes and is unable to open for April ordering.  Please make sure your child is under the correct grade. http://mydigitalmailroom.com/sja
All payments are due on Friday, May 4th, 2018.

A group of Grade 6s are promoting Meatless Mondays for their Exhibition project. They have come up with this month's special, which is Crispy Cauliflower Bites for $4.50 with a side of tzatziki dip that will be available every Monday! You will find more information about Meatless Mondays around the school.

Payment Instructions
There are two options to pay for lunches. Cash and Freshbooks.
  • Shortly after completing your order, a Freshbooks invoice will be sent to your email.
  • It may take one or two days to process your order to Freshbooks, so please be check your email diligently for the invoice.
  • We no longer accept cheque as a method of payment.
If you have any questions concerning the Lunch Ordering site or Freshbooks, feel free to email me at dbancud@stjudesacademy.com

As a reminder: St.Jude's Academy is now affiliated with an official soccer club called St. Jude's FC. Students of St.Jude are given a 33% discount that will allow them to join the club and play competitively with other soccer clubs this spring and summer (starting most likely April to September). The students will be working with excellent coaches and going to competitions on the weekend. Practices will be held (most likely) right after school twice a week. In April, besides the soccer field, the students will have a chance to play in our official soccer dome! I think this is a great opportunity!! The students have been given forms (I can e-mail extras), they should try to submit the form as soon as possible.
