Math Monday

Hello parents and students,

We had a great day today with lots of activity. We first started the day off with math. The students first did round-table discussions with each other about mean, median, and mode. Here is a video in case they have any trouble with it. Next, we started a lesson about bar graphs. Our lesson included information on how to make bar graphs. There is an anchor chart about bar graphs below. One of the hardest concepts we learned today was about intervals (when you create equal groups for the data). Here is a video that can help them understand it if they get stuck. They have to remember to make EQUAL intervals based on the range of data. Additionally, when talking about a scale use "start at ___, count by _____, and stop at _____." 

In language, we completed our 3rd literature circle and I have marked all of them. This week students will finish Hatchet and next week, we will complete our last literature circle for the book. Additionally, we did not do the spelling test because I forgot to add the words on the blog. Therefore, the spelling test is tomorrow! 

In OUI, the students were introduced to the new 3-week project, The Healthy New You. During this week, students will be tracking their food and exercise on a daily basis. Next week, we will begin to learn all about the changes that they can make in their daily routines to become a healthier person and they will begin writing journals all about their experience. Students then got into their groups and worked on the body systems handout.

A note about March Break Camp - Registration forms were sent home back in October. We have had many students sign up since then and especially over the last few days. If you are interested in registering your child for our March Break camp, please send in the completed registration form, along with the $20 one-time non-refundable deposit in order to secure your child's spot (this could be paid in cash or through fresh books). This year there are two options to choose from the first being lunch and two snacks provided or the second being send your own packed lunch and a discounted camp rate! Wacky Wednesday

Dear parents and students, 

It was back to routine for us today and wow, did we feel it! We started the day off with our math data-management pre-test. Afterwards, we did our first lesson which was all about interpreting data. We also learned the meaning of two words: infer (describe or tell information about a graph/table), and range (the lowest to the highest value). Tonight, for homework the students have to read various graphs and tables and infer information from them. 

We combined UOI and language together today. We first learned all about the new unit, Human Body, by watching an introduction video, here is the link. We then discussed the big picture idea. 

This year, we will only focus on organism to organ (tissues will be discussed a little bit with muscles). The only organ systems focused on this year are the respiratory, the nervous, the circulatory, the digestive, and the musculoskeletal systems. The students then began a group reading comprehension activity. They were all provided with a website and they have to work together to create a "handout" for the class. They will present this to the class and everyone will get a copy of the informational hand-out. I provided them will an example sheet and presentation by doing the musculoskeletal system. They will work on this tomorrow and they may chose to type up using the blank. Here is the blank copy. 

We also had a chance to visit our reading buddies, here are some pictures of them. 

Finally, but not least. I am proud to announce the speech finalists from our class that will be presenting on Friday: David, Christiaan, and Miriam. Congratulations to these three and to all the other students as well. I was so amazed at all the effort and work you put in, Ms. Walls said it was such a tough decision to pick the final three!!

Monday Mayhem

Hello parents and students, 

Monday was mayhem as we are preparing for speeches tomorrow! Today, we had a chance to do a full class practice. The students were timed and we gave each of them 2 stars and a wish. For tomorrow, make sure to be enthusiastic, memorize your speech, time it to make sure that you are over 3 minutes, and project your voice. Overall, I am very proud of all the students have achieved so far.

We also completed our third literature circle for Hatchet, they were well done and I have marked all of them.

In math, we took up any questions on the review that the students wanted to focus on. Tomorrow is the quiz!

·      Math: Quiz tomorrow, practice word problems from page 137-157

·      Language:

o   spelling lesson 19 on Friday, spelling book Friday as well

o   read chapter 13 of Hatchet (Due Tuesday)

Fantastic Friday

Hello parents and students, 

It is Friday! And it was a lovely end to the week. We started the day off with our spelling test. Next, the students did round circles on division. I recommend that students use long division because then they can spot their mistakes; they may also get partial marks for questions. Next, I handed out the review packet as well as the answer key. The students worked on the review and they checked their answer as they went along. For extra practice, all the review will be from the textbook, so the students will be bringing their textbook home.

Next, in language, the students presented their speech to half the class! Boy, where we nervous; some of the 4 minute speeches even became under 3 minutes! Over the weekend, the students should memorize their speech and keep practicing it with enthusiasm. I am so excited to see the final speeches next week.  On Tuesday, we will select the students that will move on to the final rounds. Here are pictures from the speeches.

In UOI, the students worked with their group members on their commercial. We asked an expert, Mr.Oliver, to come in and give us some key points. They look great so far and I am excited to show the final commercials during announcements. Here are some pictures of the producers.
