Working Wednesday

Dear Parents and students, 

I hope everyone is having a great evening so far. Today, we started the day of with completing our posters and then presentation on the divisibility rules. The students did a great job of showing their great presentation skills. Here is a picture of one of the presentations. 

For homework, the students have to complete practice question 1 and 2 and then complete the puzzle sheet. This video can also help if you are stuck. 

The other major task of the day was our lab experiments. We went back to the lab and continued working on our trials. Here are pictures of some of the scientists showing off their experiments...

Reminders/Homework

• Math: practice sheet question 1-2 and the puzzle sheet, however that is the minimum the students should try to complete all three sheets if possible 
• Language: Spelling test Friday (lesson 1-5), Spelling book due Friday
• Scholastic order due October 27

Triumphant Tuesday

Dear parents and students,

I hope you are having a great evening so far, today was a very triumphant Tuesday. We started with reviewing our math homework in our discussion tables. The practice questions asked that they make a table first before attempting the question, I found that the students that did not make the table were very confused about how to answer the question but were able to understand it as soon as they created a table. 

Next, we started divisibility rules, which are tricks to find out whether a large number can divide into a digit. The students were split into groups and had to create a Frayer model about their divisibility rule. Here are some of the pictures from todays work.

Tomorrow, we will continue finishing them and then the students will present their rule to the class. There is no homework for math tonight.

In UOI, we started our experiment in the lab. The students were so excited to get to work in a real lab, that I could hear them say ‘wow’ when they first entered. We discussed the safety of wearing goggles, cleaning up, and even the different vocabulary for equipment: scale, graduated cylinder, beaker etc. Here is a sneak peak at some of the scientists in the lab.

Marvellous Monday

Dear parents and students,

Happy Monday, it was a marvellous day for us. We started off with getting our spelling books back. The students have a review lesson this week and this Friday, we will be having a spelling test (20) based on all 50 words from our past lessons.

In math, we first started with taking up our answers from Friday’s lessons. Then, we completed a challenge where the students had to find the number of triangles in the image below. The students who got the answer earned a Target. 

We then looked at how to organize the number of triangles in a chart to make it easier. This lead to our lesson ‘Using number patterns to solve problems. This was a great lesson to take ‘math’ and place it into real world situations. We did a quick problem together and then the students started working on the worksheets.

In UOI, the students are still making their way through the summative package. Most of the students have finished the hypothesis and are on their procedures. Tomorrow, we will have our first day in the lab.

•  There are two options to pay for lunches. Cash and online via Freshbooks. 

•  If you choose to pay through Freshbooks, please choose the cheque option on the ordering site. 

•   Cheque payments will not be accepted. 

◦                     Shortly after completing your order, a Freshbooks invoice will be sent to your email. 

◦                     It may take one or two days to process your order to Freshbooks, so please be check your email diligently for the invoice.

Frantic Friday

Dear parents and students,

It’s Friday and it was a frantic day today. We started off the day with the spelling test. Next, we did table discussions about the homework on Input/Output tables; the students even traded their patterns for number 7 with each other. Afterwards, we switched to the new lesson: modeling with patterns. This lesson along with the one on Monday takes the mathematical concept of input/output tables and applies it to real life situations. Today, we looked at shapes; we took geoboards and we built squares in increasing size and measured their perimeter. We concluded by taking a note on how to find the patterns from the chart using pattern rules. 

In UOI, the students continued working on their research and some students are starting their hypothesis! Here are some pictures from the research session.

Also, DRA's have gone home today. Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns about them. 

In the afternoon, we also had out assembly for the Inquirer winners this year. Here are the pictures of the winners.

Reminders/Homework

• ·      Math: complete the two sheets of modeling patterns
• ·      Language: Find a NEW book (different genre, topic, etc.) and bring in the book on Monday. Read for 30 minutes each day.

DRA'S HAVE GONE HOME THIS WEEKEND 

• ·      UOI: bring devices and bring in materials in a labeled bag for Monday.
• ·      Picture day is October 26
• ·      Aftercare invoices are going out today and are due October 28

It will be an easy, breezy weekend for the students. So I hope everyone enjoys it and I will see you on Monday,
