Terrifying Tuesday

Good evening parents and students,

I hope you are having an excellent halloween so far. Today, we started off with a very exciting costume competition. The winner was an amazing robot. We also had an Elsa musical from Ms.Chin and Mr.Rozario AND a sing-of from our two Moana's Mr.Oliver and Ms.Lopez. It was a very exciting start to the day. Here are some pictures from the event.

Next, the students continued their independent research on their religion and social structure topic in ancient civilization. The individual research is due tomorrow when the students will be combining their information together.

In language, students got a chance to look at their OWA pre-assessments on news report. We then watched a video together about what makes a 'good' news report (about upcoming event). The students then took this information to give themselves one star and two wishes on their pre-assessment. Next, they started brainstorming for their science fair news report. The brainstorm is due for homework tonight if not completed in class. Tomorrow, the students will be creating their rough copies.

We ended the day off with a haunted dance, here are some great pictures from our dancing friends.

After all the activity, we were all so tired so here is a picture of one of our tired JK friend sleeping it off in aftercare.

Many Things Monday

Hello parents and students,

I hope you are having a great new week so far, we started off on a great note today. First thing in the morning, we had our knowledgable winner for the month of October. Here is the picture of the winner below.

Next, we started our new unit for math, measurement. Our first topic is, time. So we reviewed the different parts in a clock and how to subtract time and then the students worked through different worksheets.

In language, I introduced the literature circles for our new book, Percy Jackson and the Olympians: The lightning thief. The first literature circle is on Monday, November 6 and by then the students have to read chapter 1-4 and complete their assigned literature circle activity. I then read half of the first chapter to get the students started; the students loved the read-aloud.

Next in language, we reviewed the articles that students brought in and created a success criteria for the newspaper article; tomorrow, we will continue with a video about newspaper articles and start making a rough draft for our science fair article.

In UOI, the groups were split into different ancient civilizations. Each week, the civilizations will be researching a topic and on the Friday of each week, they will present their topic to a group. This week the focus is on 'religion and social structure'. Here are the pictures of our ancient civilization museum curators.

In the second half of UOI, the students finished their science fair boards and got started on practicing their boards. This Friday, we will be having a classroom science fair so the students can be judges for each other's projects and give review for the actual science fair. I will be marking the projects at this time.

Wandering Wednesday

Hello parents and students,

Today, we wandered in a community walk to Suffah Academy, to see their science fair. The students got a chance to walk around and ask questions about the different projects. When we came back to class we discussed the 'best' and the 'worst'. This was a great lead into our science fair boards. We also made a success criteria for posters and boards to make sure everyone understood how to make the best science fair board possible. Here are some pictures from the science fair and the starting of the boards.

In math, we continued on our summative. All together, the students have to: fill in a planner, write a description of the event, create a input/output table, provide details about cost/revenue and lastly create a poster inviting people to the event. The students who were away yesterday were partnered with other mentors who went through the chart creation process with them. Tomorrow, the students will continue on their math summative.

Activity Teeming Tuesday

Hello parents and students,

Tuesday was teeming with activity. We started with a math discussion about profits, costs and revenues for the charity fundraiser. Then, the students completed their math tables about their own fundraiser. Some of the students have even started their paragraphs discussion paragraphs about the project. Tomorrow, they complete their paragraphs and then they will start their fundraiser posters! These posters will be due Friday.

In UOI, the students continued to type if they had a device. We then looked at examples of MYP science fair projects. The students were then given a checklist and template they have to go through. On the back, they have to design (pre-plan) their own poster before they start glueing items on. Tomorrow, we try to put the poster together. Here is an image of what the poster should look like (they do not need to have an abstract).

We also had 5 of our classmates away today for a co-ed soccer tournament. I heard they played really well especially when they worked together. Here is a picture of our great players.

Many Things Monday

Dear parents and students,

It was a busy Monday to come back to after the weekend. The students first started off with reviewing the “Show your work: patterning” worksheets. Next, I introduced the unit performance assessment for math; it is a charity fundraiser. We discussed the possible charities and fundraising activity. Tonight, the students have to work with their parents to come with a fundraising activity and fill in the planning worksheet. Here is an image of possible ideas. The students will be working on the project over the next three days, it is due Friday.

For UOI, the students finished their graphs and conclusions. I double-checked them and signed off on all them, By tomorrow, the students have to try their best to type up their entire report for the display board. Here is a picture of what the display boards should look like overall.

Reminders/Homework

o Math: complete planning sheet for charity fundraiser

Testing Thursday

Hello parents and students,

It was our final day in the lab today where most of the students finished testing their variables. We also discussed trials and graphs today. The students were so surprised when we discussed the connection between input and output tables and their observation charts. Here are some pictures of the testing from today.

In math, we did our table discussion for divisibility rules, one of the biggest sources of errors was when the students were not putting their sum (addition) into the second column before they tried the divisibility rules. After reviewing the homework, we did a lesson on solving equations. The biggest issue that students have is that they do not show their work. For tonight's homework, they must show their work (place an arrow to show the number and then solve for the variable) in order for the answer to be marked correct. Here is a great video to help (x is the unknown in the video).

Also, we had the first session of our girls' club; where we talked about respect and being inclusive to all. Here is a picture of all the girls' club sitting together at lunch.

Reminders/Homework

  • Math: complete solving equations worksheet (SHOW YOUR WORK) -video link
  • Language: Spelling test tomorrow - 20 random words out of 50 words, workbook due tomorrow
  • Scholastic order due October 27

Have a great evening everyone,

Ms.Khan
