It's "Friyay"!

Hello Parents and Students,

Today, we started the day off with our spelling test. I have noticed that a lot of students do not know the definitions of the words that they are memorizing so I have asked the students to practice meaning of the spelling words as well.

In math, we started with table discussions about the homework from last night. The extra research question was for students to find the largest bill in Canada that is still valid; the answer $100! $500 and $1000 bills are no longer used. In the homework, I found some of the students struggled with showing their work especially because the work pages have no space. I encourage the students to write in their notebook and spread there answers out. I will be review the 'Stretch your Thinking' question again on Monday.

For math tonight, the students got two sets of sheets. Page 818 and 819 are about Making Change using mental math. This is to provide the students with extra practice. A practice game that I encourage the students to play is called Chased out: Here is the Link for the game on a computer,
Here is the Link to play on an iPad.

The other worksheets where about Counting to $10, 000. The aim of the worksheets was to encourage the students to use rounding as a strategy of finding the answer. They can choose to round to 50 or 100. Here is a video that helps with rounding

The tentative math test date is Wednesday, November 23. The concepts that will be covered are:

Telling Time

  • Money to $10,000 - estimation (rounding)

Temperature

  • Learning how to read thermometers (Celsius)

I will be providing lots of review for the students in the coming week to help them practice.

In UOI, the students completed their final teaching their final 'lesson'. The students did very well coming together as groups to research, plan and teach the other groups about their topic. Here are some pictures from the teaching session.

The students also all received their summative packages for ancient civilizations. For this summative they have to create a museum exhibit by making an artefact and creating a written visual with information about it. This weekend the students can work with parents to come up with 5 different ideas/examples of artefacts that they would like to build. Next week, we will research and make them. The projects will be all completed in class and are due Friday. The museum display will be Monday, November 27.

Reminders/Homework
  • Math: Complete worksheets on 'Money to 10,000' and 'Making Change'. Please read the blog for videos and tips
  •  Language: Complete literature circle role (week 3-Chapter 9-12) - Literature circles are Monday
  • UOI: Create a list of 5 specific artefacts that you want to build for your ancient civilization. Here is a link to some examples (the most important concept is that the artefact must be useful or used in some way in today's society)
  • Science Fair is November 30th - Here is our new bulletin board with the students' news report. Be sure to check it out on your way into the school.
