Hello parents and students,
Today, we started the day off with reviewing math. Before, we did our table discussions we took up question # 3 from the homework together. This question involved a multi-step process and quite a few students were trying to complete the steps in their head which resulted in mistakes.
So we went through the steps:
1. Write what you know. (long, wide etc.)
2. Write what you are trying to figure out. (height = h)
3. Write down the equation you use (V=l x w x h)
4. Make sure everything is in the same units. (only m or cm)
5. Then you make solve the equation.
6. Remember the final sentence at the end.
It is quite a few steps but I find this really helps the students in solving harder problems later on in the year. For this unit, the students may use calculator especially because we have not learned decimals just yet.
We then started a new lesson on money! We first began with a challenge, each group got change and they had to figure out as many ways as possible to create $5.00. There are some pictures below. The winning group were the Ancient Egyptians with 10! We then discussed how that wasn't fair because we all didn't start off with the same amount and then completed an example of giving change back. Tonight, for homework the students are completing sheets about Counting Money and Giving Change. With the giving change sheet, the students have to make sure to keep their place values aligned. Here are two strategy videos that help with counting change: video 1 and video 2.
In UOI, the groups worked on their lessons. Their last lesson for ancient civilization will be tomorrow. Here are some pictures from their lesson planning session.
We then started brainstorming ideas for our artefact museum. The students had to create ideas of what they could make and put it on the board in a brainstorm bubble. Here is the final picture.
**Our Annual Science Fair will be held on November 30. All parents are invited to attend from 2:30 - 3:15. I hope to see you there!**
