Dividing Wednesday!

Hello parents and students,

Today, we started the day off with dividing decimals! First, we started with a note. We went over estimation, short division, long division, and even checking your answer by multiplying. The students then all tried various questions with the option of either doing short or long division as long as they show their work. I also worked one-on-one with any students that did not get the problems. The biggest struggle with division is for students who do not know their multiplication table! We will be working on division tomorrow as well. The tentative date for the quiz is on Tuesday now. As of tomorrow, we will not be learning any knew concepts but instead will be practicing all the concepts we have learned so far.

In language, the students worked on their speeches, specifically practicing with partners while I continued to conference students. The majority of students have been conferenced; all the students should be working on memorizing and bringing enthusiasm into their speech (using pauses, change in tone, and body language).

In UOI, the students worked on filling their graphic organizer for the “biodiversity defenders” project. Two groups have now begun their storyboard! As of tomorrow, the students will hopefully begin filming their commercial to save biodiversity! The completed commercials will be played during school announcements! Here are pictures of the groups working.

Terrific Tuesday

Hello parents and students,

It was terrific Tuesday today. The students began by completing their round tables in math. We then did a quick ‘plicker’ quiz for math. I am using the results to gain a better understanding of which students need additional help and work problems. We then learned about multiplying decimals. Here is a song video that can help with this, but basically the students have to multiply regularly and then move the decimal over the SAME number of decimal places as the question.

In language, we first completed our second round of literature circles and I have marked all of them. The students then worked on speeches. I am individually conferencing each students to provide feedback and tips. We will be having our grade 5 class competition on February 6 and then the final school competition on February 9th!

In UOI, the students completed a classroom walk-about to see all the amazing “A world without…” posters. Here are pictures from that activity.

We then nominated the top posters and voted for the top three. The top three winners are below. The first place winner is Rashad, second place Karina, and third place Adam. They all get their posters posted around the school, well done!

Tired Thursday

Hello parents and students,

It was back to work at school today and the very tired class worked extra hard. We started the day by reviewing multiplying multiples of 10 in math. I then introduced dividing by multiples of 10. We created a note together: when multiplying a multiple of 10 by a decimal move the decimal to the right and when dividing a multiple of 10 by a decimal move the decimal to the left.

In language, the students are working on their rough copies; the target is to have them finished by Friday. I have given all the students a bookmark that includes various transition words that they can use in their speech.

In UOI, I checked the students’ research sheets and then we went through the qualities that will make a good persuasive poster, this includes; word choice (vocabulary words we have learned), contrast in images, and large text. The students also must include a food chain/food web/food pyramid in their poster and show the effect on the population of other animals.

Reminders/homework
  • ·      Math: Dividing Decimals by Multiples of Ten (2)
  • ·      Language: spelling test tomorrow, spelling book due tomorrow as well, read chapter 7/8 of Hatchet
  • ·      UOI: poster due Monday
