Wednesday Wonders

Dear parents and students,

Today, we started the day off with math as usual and we did table discussions on rounding decimals. The students found the number questions easy but some struggled with the word problems. The key is to underline the important information, show your work and to make sure to write a final sentence. Next, we learned first about estimating sums and differences (to the nearest whole number or tenth) and then actually calculating sums and differences with decimals. Here is a great video by that can help to understand decimal arithmetic. We will most likely me having a quiz on Monday on the ideas learned so far.

In language, we spent our time working on the speech OREO persuasion sheet. I have individually conferenced with all students. Most students still need to go back and add more factual information for their reasoning and explanation. Each student should know exactly what they are researching tonight.

In UOI, the students were introduced to their next line of inquiry summative, A World Without.... In this project, the students have to pick an endangered animal and then research the food chain, food webs and ecosystems that the animal effects. They will then create a persuasive poster that emphasizes the importance of saving their animal. The top posters in the class will be photocopied and placed around the school!

At the end of the day today, we also did our "ticket out the door" for chapter 1 and 2 for Hatchet. This is to ensure that students are reading the book each night and following along with the rest of the class. Our first literature circle is on Monday, January 22.
