Thinking Thursday

Hello Parents and Students,

Today, we continued our division lesson. We started off with a sheet called ‘99’ where the students had to use 99 as a divisor to find different quotients. It allowed me to figure out which students were struggling with division, subtraction, or multiplication. Some key mistakes that students were making included: not lining place values (so writing neatly), trying to squeeze all the work into a tiny spot, and making numerical errors (i.e. 0-9 = 9). Some strategies that helped the students: memorizing “Does McDonalds Sell Cheese Burgers” (from yesterdays note) and creating separate work areas for multiplication and subtraction (boxes or dividing the page into three). By the end of the day ALL the students felt that they succeeded in learning division! Hopefully, they will feel the same way tonight for the review sheet.

In UOI, we worked on hypothesis by watching a video, here is the link, about an experiment and discussing what created a good hypothesis. Then as a class, we noticed the pattern to a ‘good’ hypothesis; if independent variable then dependent variable because ______. The students were then able to go complete research for the Skittles lab and create a well-informed hypothesis. Here are some pictures showing their great research and teamwork skills.

For the Spain project, the students are well on their way. I individually conferenced the students, while they worked, and noted progress and what they need to do next, I still have a few groups left and I will complete the conferences tomorrow before the weekend.

Homework/Reminders
·      Spelling: Books are due tomorrow and the test is tomorrow.
·      Math: Review packet is due tomorrow- math test Monday (tentative)
** for parents please note, this is a lot of work but I just wanted to ensure lots of practice questions, please adjust if your child struggles and just write a note in their agenda :)
·      Spain: work on as discussed
·      Orange Shirt Day tomorrow
·      Please bring a spare set of black, yellow, or red clothes for the Spain project.

Lastly, hopefully to make your day that much better, here are some pictures with our reading buddies and the books we are reading with them.

I hope everyone has a great evening,

Woeful Wednesday

Dear Parents and Students,

Wow, today was a busy and intense day. We started off with working on DRA’s. Most of the students are done. Here is a picture from the hard workers.

Next, we switched our focus to math. We took up the answers from the multiplication homework and then we started division by 2 digits! We started with a video first, here is the link, and afterwards we completed a note together. Below is a picture of the note.

The students then worked on three questions, including a word problem. It was a very intense work period. So I am giving the students a break and tomorrow we will practice math some more. Therefore there is no math homework tonight.
For the Spain project, I checked the completion of the research sheet and then we spoke about how the students need to split the work; each group had to decide who would do pictures, the write-up, and anything additional needed for their project. We have even involved Mr.Beresford for a special surprise.

Reminders/Homework
·      NO math homework
·      Language: read 30 minutes, spelling due Friday
·      Spain project: get pictures and create information ‘blurb’ to place on poster
·      Orange shirt day is on Friday

On a last, happy note, here are two of the boys who became surprise twins.

Have a great night,

Ms.Khan

Terry Tuesday

Dear parents and students,

Today was Terry Tuesday were we commemorated the life of Terry Fox and his struggle with cancer. We started off the day by taking up the math questions about adding and subtracting; the discussions were great as I walked around the classroom. Next, we watched a video about double-digit multiplication, here is the link, and based on the video and our notes we then attempted different practice questions including a word problem. I noticed that the students struggled the most with making sure their place values lined up (ones above the ones, tens above the tens) and with bringing the regrouping digit down.

We then focused our attention to Spain; the students worked in their partners to sort out research information and next steps. Tomorrow students will be putting together all their information into ‘slide’ format for the poster.

Another big focus for today was DRA’s; almost all the students have completed the oral reading and are now completing their written portions of the DRA. Tomorrow, we will be finishing them off.

As a class, we also watched a video about residential schools and their impact and why Orange Shirt Day exists, the students then started decorating their paper shirts and tomorrow we will finish those off.

Finally, the big event of today, the Terry Fox Run; the students loved getting together with their friends and running for a cause. Here are some pictures from the awesome run.

Monday Mayhem

Dear parents and students,
I hope everyone is having a chilled evening so far; today was a nice and cool indoor day for us. We started off with math, where we reviewed order of operations. Next, we started lesson 9: Adding and Subtracting Whole numbers. We then reviewed a note on strategies and completed 3 different practice questions including a word problem. Here is a video that may help with adding and subtracting whole numbers.

Later on, we combined UOI and language. We discussed the importance of bibliographies and why we need them for any research we do (including science and language). The students then got together with their partners and completed research for Spain; they had to fill out an organizer that had a bibliography on the back. Tonight, they have to continue working on it; they need to have at least 3 different resources. Here are some pictures from the great group work today.

I handed back math quizzes today, I would like parents to review them and then send them back tomorrow. I will be creating math folders for the students and they will be adding review sheets for any questions they have wrong.
