Hello Parents and Students,
Today,
we continued our division lesson. We started off with a sheet called ‘99’ where
the students had to use 99 as a divisor to find different quotients. It allowed
me to figure out which students were struggling with division, subtraction, or
multiplication. Some key mistakes that students were making included: not lining
place values (so writing neatly), trying to squeeze all the work into a tiny
spot, and making numerical errors (i.e. 0-9 = 9). Some strategies that helped
the students: memorizing “Does McDonalds Sell Cheese Burgers” (from yesterdays
note) and creating separate work areas for multiplication and subtraction
(boxes or dividing the page into three). By the end of the day ALL the students
felt that they succeeded in learning division! Hopefully, they will feel the
same way tonight for the review sheet.
In UOI, we worked
on hypothesis by watching a video, here is the link, about an experiment and
discussing what created a good hypothesis. Then as a class, we noticed the
pattern to a ‘good’ hypothesis; if independent
variable then dependent
variable because ______. The students were then able to go complete
research for the Skittles lab and create a well-informed hypothesis. Here are some pictures showing their great research and teamwork skills.
For
the Spain project, the students are well on their way. I individually
conferenced the students, while they worked, and noted progress and what they
need to do next, I still have a few groups left and I will complete the
conferences tomorrow before the weekend.
